Who is eligible for the University Program?

Accredited, degree-granting academic institutions. The institution applies, not individual students or staff, and it is responsible for administering and monitoring the licenses. The program covers academic research and teaching only; commercial organizations license Silvaco software on its standard commercial terms instead.

What software is included?

For TCAD, the TCAD Academic Omni License gives access to any Silvaco TCAD tool, one tool at a time, and can be combined with term-based licenses of individual tools. For EDA, the EDA Academic Suite provides the licenses needed to learn the essential EDA design functions of a commercial flow. Software updates are included.

Yes. Silvaco describes its academic licensing as affordable: low-cost licenses are available for research, curriculum packages make the software available to an entire class with a single license, and the TCAD Academic Omni License carries a fixed annual fee. Prices are not published, so ask academic sales for a quote.

Is technical support included?

No. Universities do not receive technical software support from Silvaco, although software updates are included in the program. Silvaco’s commercial Time-Based Licensing, by contrast, includes technical support in its license fee. Documentation and training material are published in Silvaco’s Resources section.

Can the software be used for funded research?

The program is strictly for academic research and teaching, and any trace of commercial activity ends the licenses permanently. The published terms do not say whether grant-funded or industry-sponsored projects qualify, so ask academic sales before a funded project starts, and describe the sponsor and how the results will be used.

How does a university apply?

The institution applies. In North and South America, email academicsales@silvaco.com; in other regions, contact your nearest Silvaco sales office. Say which TCAD or EDA tools you need, and whether they are for teaching a class or for research, because different license types cover each.

What is offered

Pick by discipline. Device and process work runs on the TCAD Academic Omni License, which opens the full Silvaco TCAD suite. Circuit design coursework runs on the EDA Academic Suite, built around the design functions a commercial flow depends on. Both include software updates.
Entry requirements

Only accredited universities and colleges that grant degrees can join. The institution is the applicant, and everyone else, from first-year students to lab heads, works under its licenses.
Restrictions

The licenses are for academic research and teaching, nothing else. If commercial activity shows up, the academic licenses end immediately and permanently, and other liabilities follow. Silvaco provides no technical software support under the program, so support stays in-house.

You’ll reach the software through your course or research group, not an account of your own. That puts you on the same TCAD and EDA software thousands of students already learn with.
Educators

One curriculum package licenses your entire class. For lab work, Silvaco’s training material and worked application examples give you starting points to build assignments from.
Researchers

Research gets its own low-cost license type. The TCAD Academic Omni License covers every TCAD framework, so a project can move from process to device simulation without licensing each tool separately. It runs on the validated physics Silvaco’s production customers rely on. The published TCAD papers show where other groups have taken it.
Department administrators

The licenses are the institution’s to run. You decide who gets access and keep watch on how it’s used, because a single commercial project puts the whole academic arrangement at risk. Teaching and research sit on different license types, so apply for the mix your faculty need.

Questions about the Silvaco University Program

The Silvaco University Program is open to academic institutions that are accredited and grant degrees.
